Laurent Pillot is conducting the Première of a new version of Così fan tutte in Liverpool in July. Performances with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra - on 9, 11, 13 July - will use a new version of the opera, developed in collaboration with Professor Ian Woodfield, which is also being recorded.
Professor Woodfield's award-winning study Mozart's Così fan tutte: a Compositional History argued that for much of the opera's compositional process, Mozart and his librettist, Da Ponte, planned that the lovers should be uncrossed - i.e. Fiordiligi and Ferrando, and Dorabella and Guglielmo are paired throughout the opera. It is believed that the opera has never been performed in this way before.
Laurent Pillot was Associate Music Director of Los Angeles Opera. Così fan tutte marks his return to the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic after a season.
